Janis Katherine Gormly , age 83, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away at the home, surrounded by her loving family
on Friday, April 17, 2020.
Janis was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 21st 1936, to Theodore and Celia Leavell. Janis attended Redemptorist, now known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic school from Kindergarten until graduating high school in 1953. After graduation, Janis worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and got engaged to Joseph W. Gormly Sr. who also graduated from the same high school four years earlier. After Joseph was discharged from the U.S Coast guard, they were united in marriage Sept. 3rd, 1955. Janis and Joseph were blessed with 6 children, Joseph Jr., Tammy, Ted, Terri, Kelley and Dennis. Janis was fortunate to be a stay at home mom for her kids for almost 25 years.
Janis was active in her family and volunteered at her children's school's, from being den mother, room mother, being chauffeur to the many sports activities that the kids had, to being the mom everyone could count on to lend a hand or help out, when it was needed. Her hobbies included walking, bargain shopping and time spent with her kids and grandkids.
Janis went to work as an infant teacher at Broadway United Methodist Early Childcare Center in 1981, when her youngest went into grade school. She worked there for 17 years. An opportunity became available that she could not pass up. Christ the King Church in Kansas City Missouri, opened up their own learning center where Janis continued her love of infants for another 12 years. Along the way she made many lasting friendships with parents and co-workers all while being a positive influence to little minds.
Janis was preceded in death by her parents Theodore and Celia Leavell, her husband Joseph Gormly Sr. and her son Joseph Gormly Jr. She is survived by her remaining children. Tammy Lawson (Vernon) , Ted Gormly, Terri Gormly, Kelley Allen (Richard) and Dennis Gormly. Her sister Annabelle Kennedy ( Bob) of Sacramento CA. 13 grandchildren, 14 great- grandchildren, 2 nephews and 3 nieces.
Christian burial to be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, 7601 Blue Ridge Blvd., Raytown, Missouri, 64138
