Francis G. (Frank) Smysor II, 69, died March 16, 2018 at Overland Park Regional Hospital. He was born July 26, 1948 in Kingman, Kansas, the son of Francis G. Smysor and Bernice Wyssenbach Smysor.
The family moved to Lawrence, Kansas from Chelsea, Michigan when Frank was a 7th grader at West Jr. High. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1966. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1971 with a major in music education, and was a member of the Marching Jayhawks. He also received an MS in education from the University of Kansas. He taught music for several years in Marysvile, Kansas. He also worked for the University of Kansas Alumni Association. From 1980 until his retirement he worked for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance.
Frank married Laura Sundahl on July 4, 1981 in McPherson, Kansas. Frank was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sharon Lindenmeyer. Survivors include his wife, Laura, their son Joe Smysor and wife Gala, of Lawrence, and their son Matt Smysor and wife Becca, of Olathe, grandchildren Samuel and Natalie Smysor, of Lawrence, brothers-in -law Tom Sundahl and wife Robin, of Olathe, Kevin Sundahl and wife Nancy, of Great Bend, and sister-in-law Susan Ryan and husband Mike, of Augusta, Georgia, as well as two nieces and seven nephews. Frank cherished family get-togethers.
Frank’s passion was high school football and basketball officiating. He enjoyed all sports, especially golf, working as marshal at Eagle Bend. He was a member of Lawrence Rotary, Lawrence Breakfast Optimists, and was a long time member of Plymouth Congregational Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to encourage donations to The Alzheimer’s Association. The family is planning a Celebration of Life service to be announced at a later date.
